Yom Kippur

Explanation

Rosh Hashanah is just the beginning of the new year festival. Ten days after Rosh Hashanah comes Yom Kippur, a day focused entirely on apologizing for our actions over the past year.

On Yom Kippur adults do not eat in order to focus on apologizing for past mistakes and preparing for the year ahead. When explaining Yom Kippur to young children, it can be helpful to frame the holiday as “I’m Sorry Day.” While children may be too young for some of the rituals associated with Yom Kippur, like fasting, kids of all ages understand the weight of “saying sorry” and “doing better.”
